For more than twelve years, Solar Biologicals Inc. has been manufacturing quality products for food processing services (HACCP), industry, agriculture and medicine. Our expertise lies in the design and manufacture of easy to use kits that enable people, with limited technical expertise and training, to safely and economically carry out specimen collection procedures. For example, our pre-moistened Solar-Cultâ cellulose sponge is widely used for collecting surface specimens for monitoring Listeria and Escherichia coli O:157 contamination. Changing the moistening solution to suit different situations has led to applications ranging from sampling surfaces treated with antiseptic solutions to sampling and preserving specimens for rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Our drag swab kits (developed by the University of Maryland) and our carcass rinse kits are widely used for monitoring Salmonella in livestock housing and slaughter houses respectively.

Based on our clinical experience with the Solar-Cultâ urine dipslide, we developed our Solar-Cultâ flex-paddles. These devices are used to monitor the efficacy of cleaning solutions for disinfecting medical and food processing work areas and equipment. Surface specimen collection and qualitative microorganism identification are achieved by direct contact with the selective growth medium on the paddle, overnight growth in an incubator and qualitative identification according to colony characteristics.

Reagent preparation facilities, storage space and waste disposal problems are greatly reduced by our inexpensive easy to use kits which contain everything necessary to carry out the tasks at hand. Even the packaging materials and labels for specimen transport can be provided. Quality of life is enhanced by Solar Biologicals Ltd. by providing inexpensive timely data that will be used to make informed decisions concerning policies and practices related to the adverse effects of nuisance and pathogenic bacteria.
