For example, our pre-moistened Solar-Cult® cellulose sampling sponge is widely used for collecting surface specimens for monitoring Listeria and Escherichia coli O:157 contamination. Innovative design has brought to the market place the Solar-Cult® Sponge handle. With a quick release clip that allows for the sponge to be removed from the handle once the sample has been collected. This feature eliminates unnecessary plastic parts in the sample processing. Changing the moistening solution of the sponge to suit different situations has led to applications ranging from sampling surfaces treated with sanitizing solutions to sampling and preserving specimens for rapid polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Our drag swab kits (developed by the University of Maryland) are widely used for monitoring Salmonella in livestock housing.  Our Solar-Cult®  Dipslides are used in clinical settings to determine urine bacterial counts for patients with suspected urinary tract infections.  Since the majority of urinary infections are caused by a relatively small number of bacterial species, tentative diagnoses can be made through quantitative and qualitative interpretation of the growth of colonies on the media of our slides In companies following good manufacturing practices, it is standard practice to monitor microbial load in order to determine the status of industrial fluids and the efficacy of biocides and bacteriostatic components. Although alternative methods exist,  the method of choice is the dipslide method. Solar-Cult® Industrial Dipslides were developed to provide an inexpensive, fast, simple method for detecting microbial contamination in these problem liquids.
