Surface Monitoring Slide

The surface monitoring slide is simply an agar coated plastic Paddle which is attached to the cap of a shatter-proof, optically clear, colorless plastic vial. To sample a surface, remove the cap/paddle assembly from the vial. Holding cap in hand, press the surface of the paddle gently onto the surface to be tested (paddle will flex to right angles with a gentle pushing motion).

Solar Biologicals Inc. surface contact monitoring paddles are coated on one side with a general purpose agar medium, containing two peptones, which will support the growth of a wide variety of organisms. It is suitable for the cultivation both of aerobes and anaerobes, When supplemented with 0.7 g lecithin and 5 g Polysorbate (Tween 80) per litre of Tryptone Soya Agar, the medium can be used as Microbial Content Test Agar for testing quaternary ammonium compounds⁷. The opposite side of the paddle is coated with MacConkey Agar. This highly selective medium is suitable for the identification, detection and enumeration of coliform organisms. With the inclusion of bile salts and crystal violet, the medium gives improved differentiation between coliforms and non-lactose fermenting organisms while gram-positive cocci are completely inhibited.
