SOLAR - CULT® Pre-Moistened Sponges

Our sterile pre-moistened cellulose sponge, Solar-Cult®, is designed for sampling microbiological contamination on almost any surface. It is a convenient ready to use product, designed to eliminate the costly, time-consuming steps of diluent preparation, sterilization and application to sampling devices. Solar-Cult® cellulose sampling sponges are Gamma radiated to ensure sterility.

The Solar-Cult® easy, peel open foil pouch was selected to ensure a high quality, stable product with a long shelf life. The foil material is a technically proven vapor-barrier that prevents moisture loss. This packaging ensures that sponges are available and ready to use whenever samples need to be collected

Oxoid Buffered Peptone Water may be used as a pre-enrichment medium, prior to selective enrichment in the isolation of salmonellae from foods. It also provides conditions for resuscitation of cells that have been injured by processes of food preservation.

It was noted by Edel and Kampelmacher¹ that sublethal injury to salmonellae may occur in many food processes. In a survey involving isolation of salmonellae from meat that had been artificially contaminated with sublethally injured organisms, pre-enrichment in buffered peptone water at 37°C for 18 hours before selection in Brilliant Green-Tetrathionate- Bile Broth showed superior results compared with a direct selection method.
